Theater of the Deep – A Test Run

Theater of the Deep

An experiment in using online theater to explore consciousness

On Sunday, February 8th at 12:00 pm EST // 6:00 pm CET, three communities that love exploring big questions in creative ways — ICRL, the Scientific and Medical Network, and the Pari Center — are teaming up for something a little different.

We’re playing with a simple question:

Can we have fun doing online theater and explore consciousness at the same time?

We think… yes. And we’d love for you to come see (and feel) for yourself.

A small group of actors will give live readings of four short and imaginative scripts by Jeff Dunne: One With Nothing, The Devil Exclusive, Reflections, and One’s Cup of Tea. Each piece looks at consciousness from a different angle — sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes a little strange in the best way. After the readings, we’ll open things up for an easygoing conversation about what stood out, what surprised us, and what these stories might say about who (or what) we really are.

This isn’t a lecture, and it’s not traditional theater either. Think of it as a shared creative experiment — part performance, part exploration, part global get-together.

Bring your curiosity. Bring your sense of humor. And come explore consciousness with us… through a screen, but very much together.

During the 2025 Festival of Consciousness in Barcelona, ICRL’s president, Jeff Dunne, ran two activities. The first was a talk in which he presented the scientific evidence supporting the idea that looking at life as a form of narrative may be more than a loose metaphor, and perhaps not even a metaphor at all!

Following his talk, Jeff ran a workshop entitled “Being Not Me” in which he used art and meditation to guide a group of participants in experiencing alternate consciousnesses.  The one-hour session resulted in some incredible experiences and insights for the participants.

Understanding the nature of consciousness is intrinsically connected to the processes of self-discovery and the ability to communicate such insights to others… even (and perhaps even most importantly) when those insights defy words. In such circumstances, art is unquestionably our best language for such purposes.

In 2025, ICRL partnered with the Scientific and Medical Network’s Galileo Commission to create an enduring art installation that aims to capture different facets of what it means to be human. More than simply a collection of artworks, however, the FHE installation invites those who view the art, the experiencers, to contribute to the installation by sharing their own insights and reactions.  In this way we aim to create a continually evolving project with new artwork and new interpretations.

When The World Is Gone

When the world is gone
Time will be on its own
No-one there to see
No-one there to know

Who will decide
What happens at the end?
Will the witness cry
Tears into the wind?

When the world is gone
What has become of me?
What is in that void
Where I used to be?

Who will decide
What happens at the end?
Will the witness cry
Tears into the wind?

When the world is gone
Will winds still blow?
Or will all be still
Full of silence with no flow?

Who will decide
What happens at the end?
Will the witness cry
Tears into the wind?

When the world is gone
Can ideas still grow?
Is our knowing still there?
We shall never know

Who will decide
What happens at the end?
Will the witness cry
Tears into the wind?
Tears into the wind?
Tears into the wind?
